James Knowles Biography

James Knowles creates landscape and travel photographs from Canada to Europe and the far east. His abstract and nature images complete a body of work that encompasses many facets of the natural world. All of James’ work, whether grandly scaled or intimate, encourages the viewer to see our world from a different point of view. His photographs are held in both Canadian and U.S. collections.

The Starbucks exhibit includes samples from an award-winning series of shoreline and rock images from Lake Superior, landscapes from southern Ontario’s Beaver Valley, and nature-based abstract images.

The recipient of various awards and medals, James is also a member of the Toronto Guild For Colour Photography and the Toronto Focal Forum. His public works include the Royal Ontario Museum’s stunning bat photograph, currently hanging above Bloor Street and University Avenue in Toronto, a photographic essay on Vietnam in the ROM’s Rotunda Magazine, and a spectacular butterfly image soon to be published in the prestigious magazine Nature’s Best Photography. He has recently completed a large series of photographs which will be included in the upcoming revision of Peterson’s Field Guide to the Mammals of North America.

James is a frequent public speaker on digital photography and Photoshop use, and provides group classes and private tutoring in digital workflow and Photoshop.
